History
In 1887 Kalispell was originally called Demmersville in honor of Jack Demmers the founder. It was located along the Flathead River southeast of the present day Kalispell. Surveyors from the Great Northern Railway came to Montana and decided to bypass Demmersville in favor of locating a site for what is present day Kalispell. On December 31, 1891 the railroad graders and track layers finally reached the center of Main Street. The next day they celebrated both New Years and the arrival of the first locomotive. Citizens contributed silver coins, which were melted and going with tradition, the two oldest settlers got to drive a silver spike into the center tie. Like many new towns, Kalispell flourished because of the Great Northern Railway. It brought in businessmen, pioneers looking for a new start and tourists. It soon became known as an industrial center for sawmills and flour mills. With that followed merchants and farmers who quickly settled themselves in the area. Much of the old Kalispell still lives and thrives; you can see Conrad Mansion, and the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce located in the original train depot in the center of town.
