Lakeside/Somers
Lakeside and Somers offer an impressive backdrop of snowcapped peaks, lush forests and the brilliantly blue Flathead Lake at the center of it all. This is a place to spend all seasons. Summers are filled with hiking trips, boating, fishing and sailing, or lay back and relax with your eyes rested on Glacier National Park. The fall is filled with the beautiful foliage of the turning leaves and the crisp air. Take a hayride or go to an Ol’ Fashioned camp out. Winter is an outdoorsman’s paradise with Blacktail Ski resort only steps away, and miles of snowmobiling and cross-country ski trails abound. These two communities are a definite must-see whether you visit or live in Montana!
History
The close-knit neighbors of Lakeside and Somers are located along the northwest shore of Flathead Lake. The first inhabitants were Native American tribes that wintered along the shoreline living off the land and the lake. They would hunt game like deer, rabbit, elk and fox. They would also fish out of the lake’s clear, clean waters. Fur traders and gold seekers on their way up to Canada came shortly after. Most were from military camps in southern Montana. The expansion is credited to the Great Northern Railway. Railroad ties were needed at the time for the extension of tracks throughout the West. Naturally, the timber supply around the Flathead was abundant and it made the north end of the lake a perfect mill site. From 1900 to 1949 the Somers Lumber Company produced thousands of ties. To this day a few of the turn-of-the-century buildings are still in use.
